Synopsis

Avec 10 000 singes exportés chaque année pour la recherche vers l’Europe et les Etats-Unis, Maurice est le 2ème exportateur mondial derrière la Chine. Les producteurs défendent une production «de qualité», avec un singe «stable et équilibré», nécessaire à la recherche scientifique au profit de la santé humaine et animale. Le British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) milite pour l’arrêt immédiat de ces expérimentations animales. A Maurice, ce commerce qui génère 30 M€ de chiffre d’affaires reste discret. Dans ce pays, 52% de la population est hindoue, et vénère Hanuman... Le Dieu-singe.

«Mauritius is a beautiful Island, it is regularly visited by tourists, particulary from France and the UK, it is portrayed internationaly as a Paradise. Sadly, there is a dark side to the Island» explains Michelle Thew from the BUAV, the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection. Mauritius is actually a leading exporter of primates for the research industry. Exporting 10 000 monkeys a year for an amount of 30 M€, it is second to China. But it is a cagey, secretive industry in a hindu-dominated country where monkeys have a special status. 52% of the population is hindu, and worship the monkey-god Hanuman.
